In Collier County, drivers of cars with modified mufflers will face a $313 fine for the first offense, and $613 for any subsequent offense, according to the Southwest Florida Noise Task Force.
"This was generated by the public. There are folks in the community that cannot enjoy staying in their backyards or on their porches because of loud vehicle noise. That is totally unnecessary, noise coming from vehicles that have been where the mufflers and the exhaust systems have been altered for the sole purpose of making a lot of noise," said Burt Saunders, Collier County commissioner for District 3 and the leader of the project.
The group, comprised of the city of Naples, Collier County officials, the Collier County Sheriff's Office, Naples police, Florida Highway Patrol, and Quiet Florida, has aims of reducing noise pollution in Collier County.
"This noise that we're having is a public health issue. There's been scientific research, evidence-based research stating noise pollution is a health hazard. Mentally and physically, it can harm you. It can cause a host of issues to happen to the human body. People with PTSD or disabilities are impacted with the noise. It affects your cognition," added Mary Tatigan, who represents the noise pollution group Quiet Florida.
In addition to drivers of vehicles with modified mufflers, mechanics who perform the illegal service will also be cited, according to the group.
"A lot of times people like to have the modified exhaust because it makes the car sound more powerful, and it does draw attention to the car. Terrible for the environment. It's a federal law violation, and what they don't realize is that this actually makes the car perform worse because the fuel management is heavily involved," said Michael Warren, of Windermere Sustainable Car Care.
The Southwest Florida Noise Task Force plans on sending letters to about 300+ auto shops starting next week to raise awareness of the fines and penalties. Since the group's work began, the Collier County Sheriff's Office tells ABC7 they have issued 82 citations.
