The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is tracking the movement of Hurricane Beryl as it races across the Caribbean Sea.
As of 11 p.m. Wednesday, the storm remains a Category 4 storm producing sustained winds of 130 mph and gusts up to 155 mph. Forward motion is to the west-northwest at 21 mph.
Despite the major impacts Beryl is bringing to the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica, a strong bubble of high pressure over the southern U.S. will keep the storm moving west, preventing the storm from turning north toward Florida and the southeast corner of the United States.
Beryl broke the record for the easternmost hurricane development during June in the Atlantic. Typically, development in the early months of hurricane season is weaker and closer to North America. The average first hurricane of the Atlantic season is August 11, so we are already running far ahead of schedule. The statistical peak of hurricane season is September 10.
