Hurricane Beryl is down to a Category 2 storm on this 4th of July evening, with wind at 5 PM Thursday at 110 mph. Beryl is no longer a major hurricane and is expected to stay below major status for the rest of its lifespan.
Beryl is 215 miles east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico and moving to the west-northwest at 20 mph. This forward movement has been pretty consistent throughout the trip through the Caribbean Sea.
After weakening over the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, Beryl will strengthen slightly over the western Gulf of Mexico to a Category 1 hurricane again before coming ashore near the Texas/Mexico border, bringing heavy rain and gusty wind to this region.
Invest 96 is still "of interest" to the National Hurricane Center. It's following in the wake of Beryl, so there's shear and some upwelling of cooler water that will prevent this thing from doing much over the next several days. NHC gives it a low-end chance of development over the western Caribbean Sea and Bay of Campeche next week.
