The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is monitoring the movement of Beryl after making landfall as a hurricane in Texas this morning.
As of 11 p.m. Monday, Beryl was producing maximum sustained winds of 45 mph with gusts as strong as 60 mph. The storm's forward movement was last noted as toward the north-northeast at 17 mph, slightly faster than earlier today.
Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early this morning near Matagorda, Texas. As it moves farther inland, the risk of flash flooding and tornadoes will continue in Arkansas.
What's left of Beryl will move northeastward toward the Great Lakes by the middle of this week.
Beryl was a remarkably strong and resilient hurricane for this time of the year. Before entering the Gulf of Mexico, it set a series of records including being the earliest-forming Category 5 system in Atlantic Ocean basin recorded history.
Other than Beryl, there are no other areas of interest at this time. The season though is just getting started as the statistical peak of hurricane season is September 10.
