The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking team is monitoring the movement of what is now Tropical Storm Beryl after making landfall as a hurricane on Texas this morning.
As of 11 a.m., Monday, Beryl was producing maximum sustained winds of 70 mph with 90 mph gusts.
Beryl's forward movement was last noted as toward the north-northeast at 13 mph, slightly faster than earlier today.
Beryl made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early this morning near Matagorda, Texas. Because of its wind field, 5 to 7 feet of storm surge is possible east of its center with tropical-storm force winds extending across much of eastern Texas.
After landfall, Beryl will weaken due to land interaction, but remnant moisture and gusty winds will still work up through the Midwest through the middle of the week.
Beryl has been a remarkably strong and resilient hurricane for this time of the year. Before entering the Gulf of Mexico, it set a series of records including being the earliest-forming Category 5 system in the Atlantic Ocean basin recorded history.
Other than Beryl, there are no other areas of interest at this time. The season, though, is just getting started, as the statistical peak of hurricane season is September 10.
