Expect major road closures in Fort Myers starting on Friday, as getting on and off Interstate 75 is about to become impossible.
Starting Friday evening you won't be able to get on the I-75 ramp at Colonial Boulevard to get onto the interstate, north and south.
These major closures will begin as the next steps are being taken to get the diverging diamond project done.
"I think I'm going to have to find a different way to get anywhere. Not too excited," Fort Myers resident Caitlin Morrissey said.
That will be the case for this weekend - searching for an alternative route.
The Florida Department of Transportation will close ramps on Colonial Boulevard between Six Mile Cypress Parkway, Ortiz Avenue and Forum Boulevard.
"It’s gonna be different, but this design is safer. It’s going to improve traffic flow," FDOT Senior Construction Project Manager Juan Carrillo said.
"I'll believe it when I see it. I'm hopeful, but it's got to get here before I get an opinion," Morrissey added.
Drivers have described Colonial Boulevard to be a nightmare with all the construction going on.
Although these ramp and road closures are not ideal for your drive, it is necessary to get the job finished.
“That will create a work zone for contractors to start working on the median," Carrillo said.
Crews will also be working on lane restriping and installation of signage and traffic signals.
Another big thing to keep in mind is Colonial Boulevard will also be closed on Saturday from Forum Boulevard to Six Mile Cypress Parkway.
"Even if you know where you're going by heart, I would map it on your phone first, because it'll give you a little heads up if things are stopped or slow," Morrissey said.
You can avoid the closures by getting off at the State Road 82 exit and taking Ortiz Avenue or Forum Boulevard.
Ramps are expected to reopen on Sunday at 2 p.m., while the diverging diamond is expected to be completed by mid-November.
