All eyes are on Milwaukee as tens of thousands are gearing up to attend the Republican National Convention on Monday; this comes after 20-year-old Thomas Mathews Crooks shot former President Donald Trump at a weekend rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
It's a miracle I think God was with him," said Republican State Committeewoman JoAnn DeBartolo. "So the fact it looked like it tipped his ear could've hit him in the head, and of course, he could've died yesterday (Saturday)."
ABC7 spoke to DeBartolo on Saturday after Trump was shot. DeBartolo is one of the many delegates here from Southwest Florida who will be in attendance all week in Milwaukee. We spoke with her over the phone on Sunday.
"They closed off some of the streets, and they were not letting the Uber drivers get down, so we had to go to different routes," DeBartolo said.
Madison Cawthorn, a former congressman who is a resident of Lee County, says he's also been noticing the difference since his last visit.
"There's a significant amount of added security here is going on," Cawthorn said.
Despite the increased security, Cawthorn says something like this should never happen.
"It's so sad, and I think we just need to come together as a nation and reject any form of political violence and say we're all Americans and make this country the best it can be," Cawthorn said.
"Tomorrow (Monday), you're going to get a different feel for what people are talking about and what they're expecting for the week and everything," DeBartolo said.
The Republican National Convention will begin Monday and will wrap up on Thursday, when Trump will take the stage.
