A Cape Coral woman was arrested after allegedly hitting multiple vehicles and property with her car, causing over $4,500 in damages before driving away on Friday.
Layla Martinez, 22, was reportedly pulled over by a Charlotte County deputy on El Dorado Parkway S at approximately 7:40 p.m.
The deputy told responding officers that a neighbor got his attention and said a blue sedan crashed into a neighborhood off Pine Island Road and Skyline Blvd, and the driver may have a medical issue.
The deputy also reported that he noted heavy front-end damage and Martinez appeared to be under the influence.
Officers say she had bloodshot eyes and watery eyes, slurred speech, an odor of alcohol and poor coordination.
Martinez was reportedly asked to step out of the car so medics could check her for injuries after officers noticed the airbags were deployed and the car looked like it had been involved in a crash.
Officers say she refused to get out before they removed her from the car. Reports say Martinez was screaming, cursing and spitting at officers.
Martinez was then arrested for DUI.
Martinez was taken to the hospital to be evaluated where she continued to be uncooperative and had to be restrained to the bed, according to reports.
After investigations, detectives determined Martinez:
- Hit a vehicle at a home
- Hit two city water access covers in the neighborhood
- Hit a vehicle at another home
- Struck a cement drainage pipe at the same property
- Hit a mailbox at another home
- Caused damage to four cars
In total, reports say Martinez caused $4,700 in damages.
Martinez was cleared from the hospital and taken to the Lee County Jail where she was charged with:
- One count of DUI
- Seven counts of property damage
- Seven counts of hit-and-run/leaving scene of crash involving damage to property
- Two counts of battery on law enforcement
- One count of battery on a registered nurse
- One count of resisting officers without violence
