Since Hurricane Ian barreled through Fort Myers, causing severe damage, the intersection of Estero Boulevard and Old San Carlos Boulevard has remained dark.
Starting on Monday, nearly two years after the hurricane, Florida Power & Light is starting the process of installing 700 new streetlights.
The lights will be going from Estero Blvd and Old San Carlos Blvd from the north to the south end including the side streets.
NBC2 spoke to one homeowner about what more lights on the island would mean to him.
"Just security you know is a good thing. Get the lights on the crosswalks on Estero. At night, you can't see if somebody walks across the street, you got to watch," Fort Myers Beach resident Randy Belger said.
Randy is still repairing his home from the storm but he and so many others will soon now be able to keep working on their recovery at all hours – with more light coming to the island.
These lights are also considered sea turtle-safe, so the turtles won't be distracted by them when they hatch or try to lay eggs.
An FPL spokesperson told NBC2 that this project will take at least 15 months to complete.
