In order to combat speeding and fatal crashes in Collier County, the Marco Island Police Department is one of the many organizations participating in the Florida Department of Transportation program, Operation Southern Slow Down. The program enlists the help of states to the Southeast, to focus on reducing reckless driving, driving under the influence, and speeding.
"People don't think speeding is a big deal, but it really has life-altering consequences," said Officer Jonathon Grey, of the Marco Police Department.
This year, there have been 23 fatal crashes and three pedestrian deaths in Collier County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
"The ones I'm familiar with here on the Island are golf cart-related and pedestrian-related," Grey said.
During the third week of July, officers and departments are encouraged to beef up patrols to enforce speed zones, especially low-speed areas, school zones, construction zones, and other areas.
"We have some hot spots, if you will. Areas where I know people will be going faster than they should," Grey said.
Despite the Operation ending at the end of the third week in July, Marco Island police tell NBC2 they don't plan on changing the traffic and speed patrols.
