Over the years, NBC2 photographer Todd Ofenbeck has helped make thousands of stories come alive.
But he also has a profound story of his own.
Twenty-seven years ago, Ofenbeck moved to Fort Myers with his wife Amy. She landed a job anchoring the news on ABC7 while he worked behind the scenes as a photographer.
But within a year of getting married and starting her new job, Amy Ofenbeck was rushed to the hospital. She had suffered a brain aneurysm while at the gym.
Doctors told Todd Ofenbeck that his wife needed to be put in a coma and only had a 50% chance of survival.
"I sat there and held her hand and talked to her, and at some point, she squeezed my hand," Todd Ofenbeck recalled. "At that point, a huge weight lifted off my shoulders."
Amy Ofenbeck spent weeks at the hospital before being released. Over the years, she would undergo a spinal surgery and six brain surgeries. To this day, she continues to receive treatment for her brain injury.
"It means everything," Amy Ofenbeck said of Todd Ofenbeck's dedication to helping her recover. "He was at my bedside the whole time."
Todd Ofenbeck brushes off any significance to his actions, insisting he made a vow to Amy Ofenbeck and intends to keep it.
"She’s the one I love," Todd said. "I’ll do this as long as I can and need to. There’s no debate about it. She’s everything."
