The city of Cape Coral released its final concept for Jaycee Park ahead of its Wednesday, July 24th city council meeting.
On March 26, the city held a public review of the 30% design plans. The city then continued design work based on public comment. The city considered changing ideas like more shade, more green space, the concept of a bar and bandshell, and more.
One of the big changes in the city is adding "The Reef," a walk-up service snack bar with ice cream and other treats, rather than a bar. Plus, there are four food trucks, with room for six.
Many Cape Coral residents think Jaycee Park should be left alone, like Renee Schwartz and her husband Jeff.
"We come here often just for the peace and tranquility," Renee said. "We want to just leave Jaycee Park alone. Just leave it as it is."
The recent final concept includes adding more shaded canopies and removing the current invasive tree which will cost money. Then, the plan is to add new trees to the parks.
"In Cape Coral, there's so little open space that isn't commercialized," Jeff said. "This is about the only one. So, leave this one alone. Do you want to spend money? Put some trees in downtown. We could use some trees downtown that cool that area off."
Other ideas include reducing the number of bathroom stalls to thirteen, creating a small bandshell stage for performers and cooling stations for people and dogs.
The city said they listened to the public's feedback and did not cut corners. They will meet on Wednesday for public comment and then again on August 7.
