Republican political consultant Roger Stone predicted that the race for president will be very close between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris before a large Trump boat rally on the Caloosahatchee River.
“I still think it's going to be very tough, very close, and very hard fought. No Republican, no Trump supporter or independent thinker or America First person should think it's in the bag or this election is won. It's very far from won,” Stone said.
The controversial Republican figure was the most well-known in the boat rally that saw hundreds of boats take to the water Saturday from Cape Coral and Fort Myers.
Republicans, however, weren't the only ones out trying to persuade voters. Democrats made some waves of their own Saturday by stumping for Harris.
Despite the GOP excitement in Southwest Florida, Stone warned that the race shouldn't be taken for granted as polls between Trump and Harris tighten.
“Well, first of all, you can't poll in the eye of the storm; you won't get an accurate result. So, between the assassination attempt on Trump and the RNC convention and dropping out of the race by Biden, the seeming coalescing of Kamala Harris, it's really too early to test,” Stone said.
Meanwhile, Lee County Democrats gathered at their headquarters, talking to their phones in a grassroots phone bank to talk one-on-one with voters.
Lee Democratic Chair Jim Rosinus said it’s important to contact individual voters.
“It's nice to make a demonstration. It's nice to be out on the water, I'm sure the breeze is wonderful, but we need to talk to people and let voters know how critical this election is,” Rosinus stated.
Melia Vaccarro of Collier County said she got the important message.
“I live on Marco Island, so I drove about an hour to be here because I'm surrounded by some extreme right-wing voters, and I have to start doing something to fight back,” Vaccarro said.
She and other Dems made hundreds of calls to prospective voters, including no-party affiliates, urging them to vote for Harris.
Voters on both sides agreed on one thing Saturday, and that is they’re looking for a debate between Trump and Harris which is slated to air on ABC Sept. 10. Harris has committed to the debate and is urging Trump to agree, as the general election is now just 100 days away.
