Three men were arrested in connection to a pair of street racing incidents in Cape Coral over the weekend.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, on Friday just after 11 p.m., an officer saw two vehicles street racing at 907 Chiquita Boulevard S. The officer was parked across the street from the DayBreak Gas Station on SW 4th Street when multiple vehicles arrived in the parking lot.
Police say a black BMW and a silver vehicle lined up and began racing southbound on Chiquita Boulevard. Both vehicles reportedly exceeded the 45 mph speed limit and were weaving in and out of traffic. An officer pulled over the BMW at SW 18th Lane and Chiquita Boulevard S. The silver vehicle was able to get away before law enforcement could stop it.
The driver of the BMW was identified as Luis Hernandez Ortega, 20. The passenger initially refused to give his identification to officers, but later gave the name “Lucas Better” and a date of birth.
The passenger admitted to giving police the wrong name after dispatch was unable to verify his information. He was identified as Lucas Delgado, 19.
According to CCPD, in another incident on Saturday at around 1:25 a.m., police witnessed a gray Dodge Challenger and a black Mercedes take off at a high rate of speed northbound at the 800 block of Burnt Store Road N.
An officer stopped the Dodge Challenger at the 4000 block of Burnt Store Road N. The driver, identified as Tyler Wessels, 22, admitted to recklessly speeding with another vehicle.
Hernandez Ortega and Wessels both face charges of participating in street racing. Delgado was booked for charges of riding as a passenger in a street race and giving a false name to a law enforcement officer.
