A relaxing evening turned into a nightmare when people were running out of La Trattoria Sunday night.
"I didn't know what to do, and then, of course, one came like right down on my head and knocked me off. Next thing I know, my nose is bleeding — blood everywhere," said Annette Smiach.
Smiach and her friends were planning to go to a different restaurant, but they say they came for the cheese wheel.
"Shortly after we got the cheese wheel, about five minutes later, we all heard a loud crash," said Tom Rex, a Naples resident dining at La Trattoria.
They got the cheese wheel, but then more than they expected.
The group was sitting right below the ceiling, where most of it collapsed.
"It was very surreal. I know Deb (Rex) and Tom covered their head; I was just stunned. I heard the bang and then heard the roof starting to fall," Smiach said.
She and her daughter, along with five other people, were rushed to the hospital.
The Naples Fire Department said nine people were injured.
Those injured are suffering bumps and bruises but are glad to be OK.
"Tom and I got hit in the back, but they both had huge bumps on the back, and Annette got it worse because it knocked her out of her chair," said Deb Rex, another customer.
Water gushed from the broken ceiling all over the diners.
People dining there say at least 10 tables were impacted.
"It was just a drop ceiling that fell. Something probably caused by a pipe that broke," said the owner, Massimiliano Tonni.
The owner of the restaurant said he is working with the city and engineers to figure out the exact cause of the collapse.
"My thoughts go to everyone who was injured. I want to contact them as soon as I can because I want to see that everyone is fine," Tonni said.
For now, the manager says he does not know when the restaurant will be open, but he says they won't stop working until it is back and better than before.
