A former Lee County deputy was arrested after being accused of stealing money from people's wallets and purses while conducting traffic stops in Jan. 2024.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, there is "compelling evidence," against Tyrese Jackson, 37, including body-worn camera video.
Jackson was placed on administrative leave in Jan. as a criminal investigation began.
Detectives reviewed 120 hours of body-worn camera footage to determine if evidence existed to confirm the allegations.
As deputies analyzed the evidence, it was uncovered that Jackson, "may have stolen money from several wallets and purses of those he came into contact with during his shifts..."
LCSO says Jackson manipulated his body-worn camera during the interactions to prevent certain events from being recorded.
The sheriff's office says, "Jackson abused the power invested in him and betrayed the trust of the citizens of Lee County."
Deputies say during the investigation, Jackson resigned on Feb. 8, 2024 and moved to Maryland.
According to the booking sheet, an arrest warrant was issued for Jackson. He was arrested in Maryland and extradited to Lee County.
Jackson was charged with one count of scheme to defraud and multiple counts of official misconduct.
Documents say Jackson knowingly schemed to defraud one or more persons of $20,000 or less between Jan. 2 and Jan. 22, 2024.
“It disgusts me when one of the people I consider a family member betrays the trust of the great residents of Lee County and tarnishes the badge,” stated Sheriff Carmine Marceno, “Jackson will be held accountable for his actions and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office will continue to provide a concierge level of service.”
