An 80-year-old Port Charlotte man was arrested after detectives discovered child pornography and disturbing conversations on his cellphone.
According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, detectives began investigating Richard Mathis after receiving multiple CyberTips between November 2023 and July regarding potentially illegal material on a cellphone.
When detectives spoke with Mathis, he admitted to viewing and saving child pornography images and videos on his cellphone.
A search warrant was executed on the device, and numerous child pornography files were located. Chat conversations on the phone also revealed Mathis mentioned sexually abusing children between the ages of 4 and 9 years old.
Mathis was located at his home Tuesday and taken into custody. He faces multiple child-pornography-related charges.
