For the Florida Highway Patrol, late-night patrol inherently comes with risk.
Trooper Blake has been patrolling the streets for at least three years and says almost every night, there is a motorcyclist going more than 100 mph right here on State Road 82.
While NBC2 was riding along with state troopers, they caught two bikers going 50 mph over the speed limit.
Most times, speeding results in a ticket and traffic school, but in more serious cases, it could be thousands of dollars in fines and even jail time.
"1,000 tickets, that's one thing, but they were racing, and they were side by side. They came out of that pack. As soon as they came out of the pack, they both punched it," said Trooper Blake
This stop ended with an arrest and their bikes being impounded for 30 days.
"I was going 140 miles an hour, barely gaining on them. When you have someone going that fast, it is dangerous for the rider and the public," said Officer Blake.
But not every night or every scene runs this smoothly. Troopers say there are instances where the drivers don't stop for authorities, making it dangerous for the driver, the trooper, and other drivers on the road.
"What we are trying to do is save lives. We had 3,500 lives lost last year," said Lt. Greg Bueno.
According to FHP, this year alone, there have been 913 serious injuries related to motorcycle and scooter crashes, and 254 people have died.
Some of these stops turn into chases, which, if there is a pursuit, the troopers have to make a snap decision.
"If they refuse to stop, FHP has their emergency lights on attempting to do a traffic stop, that automatically becomes a felony," said Bueno.
In most cases, according to Bueno, troopers then try to grab a license plate number and track them down when the situation could be much safer.
"If we do engage in a pursuit, we are constantly assessing and reassessing. Is this vehicle going to stop? Is this putting anyone else in danger at this moment?" said Lt. Bueno.
What you can count on is these troopers working while you're sleeping to keep speed junkies off the streets.
