At Wednesday's Cape Coral Committee of the Whole meeting, a city staffer said there are currently 17 self-storage facilities in Cape Coral with an estimated 1.5 million square feet of self-storage space.
An estimated 1.6 million square feet of storage space is in permitting or under construction, bringing the total to more than 3 million square feet of self-storage space, existing or forthcoming.
According to a city ordinance, there are 16 stand-alone car washes in Cape Coral. There are another nine accessory car wash facilities and 12 car washes in permitting or under construction.
"That's why we're having this discussion because they are popping them all over the place. You can have one within a quarter of a mile right now," said Mayor John Gunter in Wednesday's meeting.
The council agreed that car washes should only be built if builders follow certain rules about where they can be and how they look. They would like similar regulations for storage units with a cap on the number based on population.
