The Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a pickup truck driver after shots were fired on the Bokeelia Fishing Pier when the truck slammed into a golf cart Wednesday afternoon.
On Thursday, Lee County deputies confirmed shots were fired on the pier during the incident.
Deputies say at this time, they are working with the Medical Examiner's Office to determine the circumstance and cause of death of the driver.
ABC7 spoke with two witnesses who were on a fishing boat together when they heard beeping and gunshots.
One of the witnesses was able to capture footage of the incident.
Video shows a pickup truck hitting a shack before ramming into a golf cart. It lifted the front of the truck off the pier.
A witness says he heard about five or six gunshots before hearing a final shot, and then everything stopped.
Deputies arrived on the scene and broke the glass of the pickup truck to get to the driver and covered the truck with a tarp.
The two witnesses said several people were at the pier at the time of the crash and were fishing. They were reportedly left stranded there for hours as deputies roped off the front and back of the pier in crime scene tape.
It is unclear at this time who fired the shots. ABC7 is working to confirm the identity of the truck driver.
