Two teens are facing burglary charges after Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies said they broke into cars in a Lehigh Acres neighborhood.
It happened Sunday, Aug. 4, along 3rd Street Southwest.
Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies said the resident was in his backyard doing laundry when he saw two shadows inside the 2013 KIA with the lights on.
He told deputies he yelled at them and chased them until he lost sight of them along 1st Street Southwest.
The car's ignition was damaged, and the rear passenger window was smashed.
Deputies said they received reports of two other burglaries in the area along 2nd Street West, just two streets down.
Fifteen-year-olds Charles Hill and Christopher Luis were arrested and charged with burglary and criminal mischief. Deputies also arrested 14-year-old Djuvan Joseph Dec. 2, 2007, saying he was in the vicinity of the burglary. He is facing one count of loitering or prowling.
Kia and Hyundai agreed on a $200 million settlement earlier this year over claims that certain models of vehicles are vulnerable to theft.
A news release from the plaintiff's attorneys said this is "following the automakers' failure to install basic security measures," including immobilizers in their 2011-2022 models. The release said the devices prevent people from starting vehicles without a key.
Of the $200 million settlement, consumers may receive up to $145 million.
The settlement is still awaiting final approval from a judge overseeing the case.
