The Bokeelia Fishing Pier is back open almost one week after a chaotic scene that left one man dead .
It didn't deter people from trying to catch fish at the pier, which opened at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Brandon Pelts and his two boys spent their morning on the pier, soaking up the last days of summer.
"We're just out here fishing for the last week of summer vacation," Pelts said. "Having a good day. Haven't got any fish yet, but it's early."
Andrew Jacobs came to the pier to try and catch a variety of fish because kids can fish for free every Tuesday and Wednesday until Aug. 26.
"I'm fishing, trying to catch some snook and redfish or whatever bites really," Jacobs said. "It's a nice day to be fishing. Just try to catch some fish. I caught one earlier."
The pier has been closed to anglers since Robbie Dixon drove his truck onto the pier toward several families, including children, last Thursday.
The truck smashed through the gate and hit a golf cart. The property manager told NBC2 that the golf cart was owned by the pier. She said she is glad it was there so the truck didn't hit any kids at the end of the pier.
A man shot at the truck. He is not facing any charges.
Dixon ended up dying. However, deputies said his death is not suspicious.
What happened last week doesn't scare Jacobs or Pelts and his two sons because they don't think anything like that will happen again on the pier.
"I think it was more of an isolated incident," Pelts said. "It's not every day that that that happens. So, I'm not too worried about it."
The golf cart is gone, and the gate is rebuilt. The property manager told NBC2 off-camera that the only work left to be done on the pier is rebuilding the fillet table where people wash and bag fish to take home.
