A family is grieving the loss of 9 people following a crash just outside of Belle Glade.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, nine people are dead, and one person is in the hospital after a vehicle crashed into a canal on Hatton Highway Monday evening.
Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle partially submerged and upside-down in the canal, with only the wheels visible.
A total of 10 people were in the vehicle at the time. Four were pronounced dead on the scene, and six were hospitalized.
Officials later announced only one person survived.
Records show six children under the age of 15, the youngest being only a month away from turning two, along with three adults all died in the crash.
Anntianette Edwards told WPBF her 5-year-old son Kamdien Edwards was one of the victims.
"He was just about to go into kindergarten," Anntianette added.
She said Kamdien was excited to start school and had big dreams. "He wanted to be a chef and a construction worker," she told WPBF. Anntianette explained the family was visiting Florida for a family member's birthday party and the crash happened on what was the last day of their trip.
"They were heading to the airport to come back to Connecticut," Anntianette said.
She said the man who survived attempted to save the children but was unsuccessful. "He managed to get the kids 7 and under out of the car but they still was gone," she explained.
Anntianette now hopes her son is remembered for being brave and making others feel loved.
