NBC2 took a ride with the Fort Myers Police Department on Tuesday to see how they are enacting blue confirmation lights throughout the city.
You may have noticed the little blue glow underneath the traffic lights along certain intersections in Fort Myers.
FMPD said it’s their way of knowing if a driver ran a red light.
The small light turns blue once a traffic light is red. If an officer is nearby and they see a car drive through, they can pull them over and give them a ticket.
“What it is, is for a safer way for law enforcement to be able to observe an intersection and catch people running the red light,” said Officer Ryan Beiner, who has been patrolling the streets for seven years.
The goal is to keep roads safer and keep people from blocking intersections.
NBC2 caught these lights in action as a car blew through a red light. Officer Beiner pulled the red light runner over and gave an educational warning.
“Our game is not to go out and try to rate as many tickets as possible. Our game is to prevent tragedies from happening,” said Beiner.
FMPD says the blue lights started popping up around three weeks ago and about 13 intersections will have them when the project is finished.
