A Cape Coral homeowner is working to remove a boat stranded in his dock after Tropical Storm Debby.
Damian Chmura told NBC2 he was in Chicago during the storm and looked at his cameras to check for flooding. That's when he saw the 17-foot boat stuck in the dock behind his house.
"It was pretty shocking to see to have, you know, both stuck on the dock. I was hoping it would float away, but it didn't," he said.
Chmura just bought a home in Cape Coral this year, so he said his introduction to Florida has been anything but ordinary.
"This whole Florida thing is new for us, you know, is first-time homeowners in Florida. And now we have a boat in the backyard that's, you know, stranded on our dock. So, yeah, Florida life," he said.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Foundation said it ran the boat's information to discover the boat's registered owner is dead. FWC would have to contact next of kin to remove the vessel. If the boat was deemed to be derelict, FWC would work with the boat's owner or a responsible party to have it removed, or work with local government to remove it.
Chmura said he is hoping to gather up help to remove it instead.
"Right now, we're still waiting for my guy to come and look at the boat. We're waiting for the water to go down. The water's too high," Chmura said. "I saw another guy was trying to help out, so maybe I'll get their help."
Chmura is hoping to get the boat removed in the next couple of weeks.
