One developer shared his vision on Friday, to change the area where the Hall of 50 States is in Downtown Fort Myers and transform it.
The plan is to relocate the iconic roof to the IMAG Museum, then use that space to create a seven-story, 250-unit apartment complex and a 500-space parking garage.
"It’s in my heart that we somehow save this building," said Dr. Virginia Harper.
Dr. Virginia Harper is on the board of the Lee Trust for Historic Preservation, their job is to make sure the past is preserved.
"Trust me that building is in our hearts," said Harper.
Harper isn't the only one who attended Friday's presentation to redevelop the Hall of 50 States. People like Brent Scheneman say there's a reason why the building is still standing strong today.
"It survived how many hurricanes, and Ian right there on the waterfront didn’t take it down," said Brent Scheneman.
The building is in danger of not making it to 100 years old. Richard Aaronson, the CEO of Atlantic Realty Partners, has other plans.
"The idea is to take the barrel roof, which is really the key architectural elements of that building, and relocate it to a new building at the IMAG Museum. That’s the fundamental thing we’re trying to do," said Richard Aaronson.
"Maybe we’ve had enough new buildings, I mean we have several new buildings that have just been completed or still in progress in this area," said Scheneman.
This all comes after rumors of the building being sold last week. Despite what will happen, Councilman Liston Bochette says the city will listen to all proposals
"We have to find the right fit and what is that right fit? That’s why we’re listening to these bidders," said Councilman Liston Bochette.
