Red algae is causing quite the stink along Fort Myers Beach. It’s algal accumulation along the shorelines after Tropical Storm Debby slammed southwest Florida early this week.
Right now, crews are working to clear it so you can enjoy the beach again. They are staged at Newton Beach Park and will be focusing on about four miles of beach from the old Red Coconut RV park down to Dakota Avenue.
Workers have been scooping up the algae, dumping it into huge trucks, and then hauling it away. As crews worked to clear the beach, quite a few people were still having fun under the sun.
Some people visiting from Miami say the smell was bad but didn’t stop their beach day.
"It was horrible. You couldn’t even walk to the water, it was covered. We went to the ocean. There was a little past that was empty, and we like treaded there, and then we did not want to touch the algae," Rachel Feriz and Jess Lebron said.
The town of Fort Myers Beach says crews will be out along the beach for the next two weeks working to clear all of this out. So make sure you watch out for the heavy machinery and workers.
