The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team is monitoring a tropical wave in the Atlantic Ocean, where the odds of a tropical development are growing. As of Saturday evening, this tropical wave, designated Invest 98L, has a 90% chance for development over the next seven days.
Being designated an "Invest" means it is now an area of interest from the National Hurricane Center and computer models will now be generated from this point regarding this disturbance.
The system would likely reach the Leeward Islands and Greater Antilles by early next week.
Any development in the next couple of days would be slow; however, by early next week as the wave moves towards the Lesser Antilles there is an 80% chance for a tropical depression to form.
It's too early to know if this potential system would impact the U.S., but based on next week's weather setup, some of our more reliable computer forecast models hint at an eventual turn to the north.
If it becomes a named storm Tropical Storm Ernesto is the next on the list.
