The Conservancy of Southwest Florida says a painted gopher tortoise was found on Aug. 1 at a golf course construction site in North Naples.
The tortoise was found with the name "Tom" painted on its carapace, which is another name for its top shell. The Conservancy says aside from that, the tortoise was in good condition.
The paint was successfully removed from the tortoise's shell using a non-toxic soy-based product. The process was stressful on the tortoise, as it became very active and only tolerated limited amounts of handling before it became agitated. Due to this, the process spanned over several days.
The Conservancy of Southwest Florida wants to remind everyone that A tortoise or turtle shell is living tissue and being covered in paint is harmful to the animal's health.
