The Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO) donated a drone to the Captiva Island Fire Control District this week.
This comes after rescue teams have had many callouts in the water off the island, including two fatal drownings.
"The water never losses, mother nature never losses," says Sheriff Carmine Marceno. "Having that technology, every second or minute could be life-changing or lifesaving."
LCSO says a drone's quick ability to launch instantly during an emergency will likely save lives in the water.
"We all are in this together, so having that eye in the sky in seconds could make or break an incident," says Marceno.
The sheriff's office electronic surveillance unit delivered the drone and trained the Captiva team on how to operate it properly.
Marceno says saving lives is always a team effort.
"It doesn't matter who deploys it, it doesn't matter who is the one who finds something or someone, it just matters that we do," says Marceno.
