A Chicago man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in federal prison for charges in a Fort Myers murder-for-hire.
Latrel Jackson, aka "Kobe" , was hired by 25-year-old Marvin "Mesh" Harris Jr. to travel from Chicago to Fort Myers to commit murder in exchange for $10,000 in November 2019.
According to court documents, Harris also hired someone identified as D.S., who is deceased.
Investigators said Harris' motive was to retaliate against people who he believed had previously robbed a Fort Myers residence. Officials determined he and others sold drugs from that residence.
Harris suspected the people who committed the robbery and shooting were in the Fort Myers gang known to law enforcement as "Bucktown."
After making the agreement, Jackson and D.S. flew to Fort Myers on Oct. 28, 2019. Harris picked Jackson and D.S. up from the Southwest Florida International Airport.
Harris provided partial payment and firearms for the planned murder, according to the Department of Justice Middle District of Florida.
Jackson and D.S. initially stayed at Harris Jr.'s "trap house" in Fort Myers but moved to a motel on Palm Beach Boulevard.
Harris gave them a vehicle a few days later. The duo then went to a known Bucktown hangout in Fort Myers and shot a victim, K.U., in the head while he was standing in front of a home near the curb of the street.
After the deadly shooting, Harris paid Jackson and D.S. the remaining money for the murder.
They kept the guns used in the killing and took a bus back to the Chicago area on Nov. 3, 2019.
Law enforcement searched Jackson's Chicago-area home on Nov. 21, 2019. They were able to find two firearms in an attic space in Jackson's room.
Jackson was sentenced for conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire and murder-for-hire. Harris was sentenced to 45 years in prison earlier this year.
