Labor Day is approaching, and crews are putting in some real work to get Fort Myers Beach back on track.
Earlier this month, the beach was covered in red algae and debris because of Tropical Storm Debby.
Barb Hayek and Marsha Boyd are both visiting from different states, but they share something in common — they don't like seeing red algae.
"It's a cycle of the gulf, cycle of life. It happens," Barb Hayek said.
"At times it's been bad, I mean it's terrible," Boyd said. "You know, I hate it, so we try not to come to the beach when it's bad."
Over the last week and a half, crews have been busy cleaning up the algae and debris from Tropical Storm Debby on the beach.
The town says they have collected several hundred cubic yards of it. After ABC7 showed visitors what it looked like before, they were shocked.
"The pictures you showed me were really bad," Boyd said.
"I feel like the town does the best they can to get it out of here for people, so that they don't have that anxiety," Hayek said.
The town says the algae and debris will be removed and disposed of off the island at a dump site on Friday.
