Participation soared this summer for the Lee County Library's Summer Reading Program.
The library system distributed more than 13,000 free books to children and teens throughout Lee County.
More than 3,500 people of all ages put on their reading glasses for the challenge. Participants managed to log more than 17,000 books and 827,270 minutes of reading time.
The library also hosted other programs in June and July featuring live music, animals, science experiments, art and magic.
Foam parties, tasty treats and face painting were among some of the kickoff activities offered, along with encouraging sign-ups for the read-a-thon.
This year also marked the return of the Teen Summer of Service program. The program offers teens from 12 to 18 years old the chance to earn service hours with local nonprofits that help the community.
Forty-three teens earned more than 600 service hours with the program this summer.
Library programs take place all year long and are always free and open to the public.
