To tow or not to tow - that's the confusion Mayor Dan Allers says is circulating after a report came out stating the Town of Fort Myers Beach is to consider towing your cars away.
After numerous phone calls and messages, the mayor wants to set the record straight only on NBC2.
He says the Town of Fort Myers Beach is not in the business of towing cars all because of expired meters.
Mayor Allers says in an old ordinance the town was reviewing the language that read "require payment by cashiers check or money order of fines due from owners of vehicles that are immobilized."
It was intended to only change the way you pay a ticket that you may have received past the meter time - nothing to do with towing.
"It wasn't even wasn't even discussed. So it was just some cleanup to the payment language in the ordinance," Mayor Allers said. "I mean, no one reached out to us to ask for any comment. So it did take us by surprise that that that was put out there because, you know, people were working very hard to get their lives back in order. And these businesses are working very hard to make sure people have places to come down."
Mayor Allers reiterated to NBC2 that towing on the island is extremely rare and if your car does have to be towed off for situations, like if it gets stuck, that is when they contact the Lee County Sheriff's Office to handle it.
