In Cape Coral, Florida, a neighborhood is dealing with the loss of a beloved gopher tortoise named Toby, who was discovered dead last Sunday. Gene St. Louis, a local resident who had been closely monitoring Toby for the past three years, reported the sad news to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
St. Louis had been documenting Toby’s daily activities through videos, showing the tortoise as it roamed freely in the area near NW 43rd Place and NW 25th Terrace. Toby was found dead with a cracked shell.
According to St. Louis, a neighbor’s dog first alerted them to the situation after detecting an unusual smell. The presence of flies around the deceased tortoise led to further concern, prompting a nearby resident to notify St. Louis about the tragic find.
Pascha Donaldson from Cape Coral Friends & Wildlife emphasized the significance of gopher tortoises to the local ecosystem.
“Gopher tortoises play a crucial role in our environment. We mark their habitats with PVC poles and numerous signs to ensure they’re protected, especially as Cape Coral continues to develop rapidly,” Donaldson said.
She urged residents to be vigilant and respectful of wildlife to help preserve their natural habitats.
The FWC is currently working with the city of Cape Coral to investigate the cause of the tortoise's death. The FWC encourages anyone who encounters injured wildlife to contact them immediately.
