The man involved in an Ave Maria area shooting and police chase will appear before a judge Friday afternoon.
Hilberto Callejas, 26, was taken into custody on Thursday after deputies responded to the scene around 8:54 a.m.
The chaos began on Iron Horse Way and Roma Street , where deputies report that Callejas allegedly collided with another vehicle and then smashed a car window with a gun.
According to deputies, Callejas then shot a witness in the shoulder. The victim's family has informed NBC2 that while the injured person is currently in the ICU, they are expected to recover.
Following the shooting, Callejas fled the scene, leading deputies on a high-speed chase that lasted approximately 20 minutes.
The pursuit took them into Golden Gate Estates, near Estates Elementary School, which was put on a "secure the campus" protocol as a precaution.
Callejas eventually crashed his vehicle at the intersection of 60th Avenue Northeast and Everglades Boulevard.
Deputies and K-9 units eventually apprehended him after he attempted to evade capture by hiding in the wetlands behind a nearby neighborhood.
Callejas is charged with:
- Five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon
- Shooting a missile into a vehicle
- Four counts of cruelty towards child
- Fleeing from law enforcement
- Six counts of aggravated battery battery with a deadly weapon
He is set to appear before the judge at 2 p.m.
