In the high school football preseason, we saw Port Charlotte score 37 unanswered points against Sarasota Riverview to make the come-from-behind win. Week one featured a lot of the same offensive prowess.
Island Coast got their defense going in week 0, only allowing 3 points from Bonita Springs. The Gators got out to a hot defensive start in the regular season opener as well, sacking PC's Logan Flaherty on the first play and recovering a Pirates fumble deep in their own territory.
After an unsuccessful IC drive, a punt snap went way too high for the Gators and rolled past the back of the endzone, resulting in a safety and a 2-0 Port Charlotte lead.
Flaherty makes this next drive count, connecting with Cameron Becerill for a 23-yard touchdown. 9-0 Pirates.
Port Charlotte would find themselves in scoring position again after another botched snap puts the Pirates at the 15-yard line. Ike Perry punched in his first regular season tuddy to make it 16-0 in the first quarter.
In the second, Island Coast is able to get some offense cooking. Dominic Rosado makes the long pass to Kennari Shorter to get down within 10 and Gervaris Leaphart finished off the drive to cut it to 16-6.
But from then on out, it was all Port Charlotte, getting out to a 37-6 lead at the half and wrapping up the night with a whopping 50-6 final.
