A man had to be taken to the hospital after being struck by lightning near Linhart Avenue in Fort Myers.
The Fort Myers Fire Department said it received a call about the incident around 6:43 p.m.
FMFD said he was taken to the Gulf Coast Medical Center's trauma center.
His family said he was standing under a mango tree in their backyard when he was struck.
Ximena Herrera says her dad, Wilmer, was outside with some friends when it happened.
"He was near all this electric stuff while working on the van," said Herrera.
NBC2's Hope Salman spoke with one of those friends. He only speaks Spanish, but told NBC2 that Wilmer was holding on to a piece of metal attached to a tree when the lightning struck him. Then, he fell over unconscious.
Herrera's mom is now with her dad as he recovers in Tampa from burns.
The Fort Myers Fire Department reminds people to take cover as soon as they hear thunder.
