Two victims have been identified after a gas leak in a Fort Myers Beach home on Saturday evening.
Lee County deputies say they responded to the residence on Palermo Circle around 9:30 p.m. in reference to a death investigation.
The initial caller told deputies that he hadn't seen his neighbors, Michael Dewitt and Jack Faler, since Friday around 6 p.m.
The caller told deputies he was worried due to the strong odor of natural gas coming from the neighbor's home so he walked to the house.
Reports say he grabbed the door handle and noticed it was unlocked before entering the house and calling out Michael and Jack's names.
He then entered the first-floor back bedroom where reports say he found Faler without a pulse. That's when he called 911.
Lee County Fire and Rescue and Fort Myers Beach Fire and Rescue responded to the scene with protective equipment. Firefighters entered the house and found both males inside.
Dewitt was reportedly found in the third floor shower. Both men were pronounced dead on the scene.
Firefighters confirmed a natural gas leak was coming from inside the residence.
Due to the nature of the incident, major crimes homicide detectives responded to the scene to take over the investigation.
TECO Gas responded to the scene to locate the gas leak source. The TECO Gas utility coordinator responded and determined a disconnected pool pump exhaust, which led to the second story outside of the pool, was the gas leak source.
