It's easy to see why getting to and from Victoria Swayze's home could be a pain.
Swayze lives on the corner of Andalusia Boulevard and Northeast 21st Terrace, which is in the North 1 West UEP construction area. Crews contracted by the city are ripping up the roads there to connect residents to city water. The contractor's large equipment is even stored right next to her home. Because of this, Swayze says she often can't get to the driveway.
"Most of the time, I have to come up through the grass and go around them," Swayze said. "I think it's a crazy mess. And I know it needs to be done, but it's a little stressful, especially because I have a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old.”
We reached out to the city of Cape Coral. They provided us a copy of the 40-page information package they give to residents who live in construction areas (linked here: North 1 West UEP information packet .) It addresses a lot of concerns, like what to expect before, during, and after construction. It even addresses potential driveway issues.
"We understand that construction is an inconvenience. Maintaining access to homes and businesses is a priority. During active trench excavation and some other activities, such as street paving or driveway construction, driveway access may be restricted. There may be times when you have to park in an area other than your driveway. Construction representatives will attempt to contact residents prior to driveway disruptions," according to the information package.
However, nothing excuses the way Swayze says construction workers have treated her.
“I've tried to be patient and wait. Sometimes, they move, and they're not always the most respectful about it. Like, I've been flicked off. They've rolled their eyes at me," Swayze said.
Victoria says she's taken these concerns to the city multiple times over the past week. The city said the first time they heard from her was this morning, and they are taking her complaints very seriously.
