They've been called the dynamic duo of Southwest Florida airwaves broadcasting on 96 K-rock for more than 30 years.
Radio veterans Stan and Haney said goodbye Friday to their listeners on Friday after broadcasting from their Estero studios for 33 years together as the "On Air" light came on at 3 p.m. with a lot of emotion for the very last time.
“Stan and Haney! The final show. I had no idea it would come to this day — 33 years at 96 K-Rock,” Stan announced to his audience.
The team produced a total of 7,700 shows together through good times and bad.
Stan said the last three years have been difficult for him and Stan as they faced numerous health issues.
Stan had a heart attack in 2022, and just three months later, Haney suffered a stroke.
“We were discussing maybe it's time to close shop,” Stan said.
The two said they outlasted all of their critics over the years.
“There were people who looked us straight in the eyes and said you guys suck and are going nowhere,” Stan said.
But Beasley Broadcasting station manager AJ Lurie said the pair's ratings over the years had proven everyone wrong.
“They've been No. 1 since the day they cracked the mic,” Lurie said.
He said the team was always popular with their audience, and it was more than just ratings but rather what they had done for the community. He said he didn’t think there would ever be a better duo in SWFL radio.
Both men were left speechless Friday after station management announced the studio they used was being named in their honor.
However, the biggest thank you, they said, should go to their faithful audience who always tuned in for a good story.
“We have the most loyal audience. We've been loyal to them, and they've been loyal to us,” Stan said.
And before the studio went dark, Haney, who was left nearly speechless from his stroke, uttered five emotional words to an audience who had supported him over the years.
“I love you! Thank you!” Haney said with a warm smile.
Then, the On Air light went dark as Stan and Haney become radio legends in Southwest Florida.
