This week, the Cape Coral City Council could take another step forward in bringing speed detectors to school zones across the city.
In June, city staff presented the council with a traffic study. The study found that, in one week alone, more than 100 people sped in 16 school zones in Cape Coral. Patriot Elementary School attracted the most speeders.
The fastest speeders were documented by the Diplomat Elementary and Middle School, reaching speeds up to 68 mph. Police Chief Anthony Sizemore said the data suggested there is a "heightened safety risk" at Cape Coral school zones. Because of this, the Cape Coral City Council unanimously decided to add speed detectors to 12 school zones across the City.
Those schools include Ida S. Baker High School; Challenger Middle School; Diplomat Middle School; Mariner Middle School; Trafalgar Middle School; Cape Elementary School; Diplomat Elementary School; Gulf Elementary School; Oasis Charter Elementary School North; Patriot Elementary School; Pelican Elementary School; Skyline Elementary School; Trafalgar Elementary School; Heritage Charter Academy of Cape Coral; St. Andrews Catholic School; Nicaea Academy of Cape Coral and Cape Coral Christian School.
If people are caught going 10 miles above the speed limit in these zones, they will be fined $100.
At Wednesday's public hearing, the council could decide which company it wants to install the speed detectors. The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m.
Back in June, Sizemore said he believed this project could be done before the beginning of the next school year.
