It was an extra-slow drive going through the work zone on Little Pine Island Bridge on Tuesday.
The Florida Department of Transportation delivered concrete bridge piles and unloaded them onto the barge all day as part of the Pine Island Causeway and Bridge Reconstruction Project.
The project will widen the bridge from 32 to 53 feet.
Crews cleared traffic in between deliveries in the hope of lessening the impact on drivers on and off the island.
However, that didn't seem to help much. Doug Root, who works at D and D Matlacha Bait and Tackle, noticed the traffic.
"If you live out on Pine Island or you're coming off the island going to Cape Coral, it is backed up a little bit," he said. "We're just worried if it's backed up that much now, how bad is it going to get?"
Root said the traffic could get worse during the season, but it's just something people need to deal with and plan for accordingly.
FDOT is working on strengthening the bridge's resistance and structure for future storms.
In fact, they moved the project start date from 2027 to this year because of all the damage from Hurricane Ian.
The project should be completed in the winter of 2025.
