Florida pays some of the highest home insurance rates in the country and CNBC has revealed some of the best insurance companies to have in the sunshine state.
The annual home insurance cost in Florida is just over $5,500 a year, compared to the $2,200 nationwide.
The high cost of insurance has many people holding off on buying a home in Florida.
However, if you're shopping for insurance CNBC says Tower Hill offers the best affordability in the state.
Fort Myers Insurance Agent Doug Nellans said his agency has recommended Tower Hill to new customers for many years.
“They are very reputable and have great financial stability rating,” Nellans noted.
Tower Hill’s rates are typically hundreds of dollars less than the state average and Nellans said they also offer great benefits.
“Certainly they're one of our most popular options with clients,” Nellans said.
Second on the CNBC list is State Farm, said to have the best customer service in Florida, but getting them to insure you could depend on your home.
“Insurance companies are becoming much more discerning when it comes to the age and condition of the homes they'll accept into the programs,” Nellans explained.
Farmers and AAA are among those who have scaled back coverage in Florida making them more difficult to get.
“Even these veteran companies sometimes overextend themselves and are forced to make difficult decisions when market conditions deteriorate,” Nellans said.
Not on the CNBC list is the state's largest insurance company Citizens, which has always been considered the insurer of last resort for those who can not obtain it through any other company.
The state-backed company however is a solid choice for those who can't get insurance.
According to the experts, everyone should shop and compare quotes and hire a trusted agent.
