There are lots of ways to leave a legacy. For Doug Skins of Estero, it started as his hobby for hats.
"Knowing that this is for a real cowboy out there, I'll probably leave a little bit of the singe," says Doug.
He shapes and sizes them from scratch. Like a legacy, Doug hopes his hats will withstand the test of time.
Doug says, "Most people have big heads is what I'm learning."
From seams sewn to words of wisdom drawn, every step of the process is meant to be meaningful.
Taylor Tones will eventually pass down her hat to her 2-year-old daughter, Luna. "It'll be a reminder for her never to feel alone and to have a piece of me with her at all times," Tones says.
To Doug, these hats are not merely cloth and brim. More than something you wear, they are something you keep close to your heart.
"I call this my dad hat, though, because — sorry, I didn't think it would hit me — my dad passed away a year and a half ago. I just think he would have liked this hat," says Doug.
It's partly thanks to his dad that Doug fulfills his calling, hat in hand.
