Jaycee Park may not have its name for much longer.
A well-known Cape Coral family is requesting the park to be named after their grandfather.
In June, Patricia Dean asked Cape Coral if Jaycee Park could be renamed to Roger Dean Park, in honor of her late father, who started Roger Dean Chevrolet . It is the first car dealership in Cape Coral.
The current name, Jaycee, is shorthand for the United States Junior Chamber . It's a leadership training service and civic organization.
Several Cape Coral residents who use Jaycee Park every day said they like the organization and its purpose.
"This park was named Jaycee Park after the Jaycees, which is an organization of volunteers who planted trees for identification and educational purposes and helped this park to grow," Scott Kemp, Cape Coral resident, said.
Maria Love said she doesn't understand why Dean is deserving.
"I can sell cars," Love said. "Anybody can sell anything. That doesn't mean you get the park named after you."
Kathe Lopez said the same thing.
"I bought a car from Roger, but why should his name be on this park?" Lopez said.
The popular Cape Coral Park could change for free.
A new sign at Jaycee Park said you can mail written input to the city hall unit on Oct. 3.
