After a week of silence, Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann finally addressed her recent DUI arrest today at the city council meeting.
“I believe the public deserves transparency regarding this issue. I have full remorse,” Heitmann said. “The toll that this has taken on my family could not easily be put into words. I am profoundly sorry for the impact that it has had on my friends, my family, my constituents, the city staff, and the public. I am humbled by the outpouring and support that I had and received from the community, and grateful for the understanding of compassion and kindness. It is my intention to reflect and address this on a personal level, and I am determined to earn back your trust to continue to serve this community with integrity, dedication you deserve."
This follows after Heitmann was arrested by Naples police last Wednesday night for driving with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. The arrest happened after a couple called 911, claiming the mayor followed them to their home.
Dashcam footage from the arrest shows the moment an officer informed Heitmann, “Unfortunately, right now, you are going to be placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.”
Heitmann didn’t answer any questions Wednesday, but City Councilman Berne Barton shared his thoughts on the situation, especially with many people online calling for her to resign.
“I understand where they're coming from. Like, I said, it was very unfortunate circumstances last week. The most important thing we can do, in my opinion, is to allow the legal process to play out and take appropriate steps at that point in time,” Barton said.
Heitmann wrapped up her statement by saying she hopes the community will accept her apology after her 12 years of serving Naples.
