The NBC2 First Alert Hurricane Tracking Team is monitoring five areas of disturbed weather for potential tropical development this week.
Thankfully despite the number of areas being watched, none pose a direct threat to our local community for now.
Area to monitor #1: Northwest Gulf
An area of low pressure is producing disorganized storms in the northwestern Gulf near the coasts of Texas and Louisiana.
Chances for development remain low at only 10 percent over the next two days and 10 percent over the next seven.
Upper level winds will create a more hostile environment for development heading into the weekend.
Regardless of any gradual development, rain is the main issue with this feature, as several inches are forecast to fall across the northern Gulf coast through this weekend.
Area to monitor #2: Western Caribbean Sea
The second area to watch is a tropical wave moving quickly west at 20 mph through the northwestern Caribbean. The disturbance will reach the Yucatan Peninsula on Friday and work into the southwestern Gulf this weekend.
The National Hurricane Center is putting the odds of development near zero over the next two days and at 30% over the next 7 days.
Some forecast computer models suggest the tropical wave could end up developing into a tropical system in southern Gulf of Mexico. Water temperatures are very warm so we'll keep tracking its progress throughout the week
Areas to monitor #3, #4 and #5: The Atlantic basin
The third area we are monitoring is a non-tropical area of low pressure a few hundred miles east of North Carolina. The disturbance may acquire some subtropical characteristics as it tracks away from the U.S. toward the northeast. Chance for development are at 30 percent over the next week.
The fourth area we are monitoring is a few hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Strong upper levels winds are expected to create a hostile environment for development. Chances for development are kept at 0 percent over the next two days and 10 percent over the next seven.
The last area of interest is a broad area of low pressure in the eastern tropical Atlantic. Chances for development are at 10 percent over the next two days and 20 percent over the next seven.
