It's been nearly two decades since Fort Myers Councilmember Johnny Streets has served his community. He is a retired Law Enforcement Officer with the city of Fort Myers Police and also continued to serve the public through the Housing Authority of the city of Fort Myers and Lee County Housing Authority.
Now the city leader is ready for the next chapter of his life. Streets decided to run for Ward 2 for his fifth term last October.
"I’m not completely exhausted, there’s some other things that I would like to do and you know what’s going on in the country right now we need young people to get involved," said Streets.
Streets told NBC2 that Ward 2 has changed a lot since he started 17 years ago. His district covers the Dunbar area, all the way to Lehigh Acres. He noticed that there was a lot more art, buildings and more people.
"We are just doing so much, but Ward 2 seems after the redistricting is so large it’s just blossoming all over," said Streets. "My only regret that we probably haven’t done enough for all of the wards, but we continue to move forward."
The thing he will miss the most? Is the people he met over the years, trying his best to solve their problems.
"I’m somewhat of a people person, I won’t be missed for having company. I like to go where sometimes I’m not wanted just to meet people and see what they’re doing, how they feel and listen," said Streets.
Seventeen years of hard work for this city, now slowly coming to an end.
"I have to be kind and humble and knowing that you were given an opportunity to do something that some people will never get a chance to do and I didn’t squander it. I appreciate it, I love it, and I would do it again," said Streets.
Jacquelyn McMiller and Diana Giraldo are competing for Johnny Streets' seat for Ward 2 in November. Count on NBC2 to keep you updated on who wins.
