The school year is back in full swing, and kids are making their way to the bus stops early each morning. Some of these stops are in rough shape, making it harder for kids to safely wait at the stops for the school bus.
A Lehigh Acres mom, Abigale Kelly, is leading a group of volunteers dedicated to making bus stops around Lehigh Acres safer for kids.
Kelly started working on the stops herself with a weed whacker and her daughter, Everlee. Some people have started calling Kelly a Lehigh community hero.
"Not all heroes wear capes. We just put a toddler on our back and keep going," Kelly said.
Last week, Kelly used social media to recruit some extra hands.
"I will stop anybody that has a lawnmower in the back of their truck. I will flag down anyone. We are Lehigh strong. That's what we are," Kelly said.
Several different people have volunteered to help clear the bus stops of waist-deep grass. One couple who owns First Stop Lawn Care LLC, has helped out mowing over 30 stops alone.
So far, Kelly and volunteers have cleared and mowed more than 102 bus stops out of the 223 stops in the Lehigh Acres area.
Kelly said they will be starting a program for people to adopt a stop.
"Anyone that lives in a vicinity of a bus stop, I don't care if it's just one bus stop, one half of a bus stop, a side of a bus stop. Anything helps," Kelly said.
Derek Felder, president of Unite Lehigh, was also out at the stop Thursday. He told NBC2 that everyone needs to come together and use their resources for things to change.
Kelly's manager believes in the movement. They've shown support by providing free one-hour gameplay passes to Dave & Buster's. These passes are a way to show appreciation to anyone who helps with the initiative.
